[opencms-dev] OpenCms used as pure CMS?

Thanks, Paul,
Not really - we are already using OpenCms and like its template system and
delivery functions, but a request has come in to provide a smarter
"research tool" over a section of the content. Our initial response was to
store the "special" content in a database and provide JSP-fronted query and
report tools, but then the question came down the line why not use the
OpenCms repository and the OpenCms presentation features, etc.
We had a go with certain success, but the JSPs were clunky and not
particularly efficient nor robust, so now I'm trying to refine our use of
OpenCms to make the separation between what is our site "wrapper" and what
is our research application. In our mind the difference isn't between
webDAV and OpenCms but rather between OpenCms and custom Oracle tables.
Regards,
Mark

Please respond to
opencms-dev
Are you looking for a low level content/document management system? Would
webDAV be more appropriate?
Have a look at: http://jakarta.apache.org/slide/index.html

Subject: [opencms-dev] OpenCms used as pure CMS?
Hi All,
We are interested in investigating OpenCms' use as a "pure
CMS" - i.e. to
use it as a storage and retrieval repository but to side-step
the normal
page delivery mechanisms. Our application will provide its
own
content-entry interface, and will be responsible for
formatting the output
upon retrieval. Content items will be formed from multiple
sections and we
will be investigating methods of performing queries on the
content to
satisfy the application's research criteria.
The OpenCms workplace console will still be available for
administration
tasks, and for managing content to one side of the
"application" content
described above. Further, the "normal" site maintained by
OpenCms will in
fact contain the front end to the application making use of
the lower-level
CMS functions.
My question is this: although I believe this to be possible,
is it in fact
an adviseable or "okay" way to use OpenCms? Are there any
pitfalls, or
further recommendations?
Thanks,
Mark
Mark Foley
