Nico,
it can be problem of MySQL connector as well.
You can try to use mysql-connector-java-3.0.5-gamma-bin instead of
mysql-connector-java-2_0_14-bin from RC1.

I've tried it right now and it seems to work, but try it better on test
server, not on production server... ;-)

Which version of OpenCMS ? and MySQL do you have?
Maybe it's really a problem of RC1? Or MySQL-max Version I have.

We just wanted to let you know that we are experiencing the same problem.
Too many SQL-Connection reduce performance massively and when it reaches the
maximum number of connections allowed by MySQL, the system just stops,
printing out that no more SQL connections can be created.
This is currently our biggest problem, so if anyone knows help, please
contribute here.
