Hi Jon,
Channels are just a way to provide content for different themes, that's to 
say news, articles, and so on could display the same initial data. Let's 
imagine that your website has a forum, news material, documentation content 
and that one contributer provides a new entry for a new book, you could 
have this same material added to the news part and documentation part of 
your website.
