Another way would be to use MS Visio's database reverse engineering
tool. Although it wouldn’t be real time, it is really cool for
documenting design.

Bryan,

         I have not used any of the database tools listed below, but I 
understand that they are all useful:

                 = MySQLFront
                 = MySQL Navigator (http://sql.kldp.org/mysql)
                 = MySQL Control Center (from MySQL AB)
                 = DBTools

Of course, links to other, similar tools can probably be found at 
MySQL.com, SourceForge.net, or FreshMeat.net.
