1. Change the name of monthes and of days of week in file com.opencms.modules.homepage.news/administration/news/EditBackOffice where you find the configuration of java applet that build the calendar
2.It is possible that your server is set up with an english system. So try to put in EditBackOffice the following lines:
<inDateFormat>MM/dd/yy</inDateFormat>
<outDateFormat>%M/%D/%Y 12:01 AM</outDateFormat>
<outStartDateFormat>%M/%D/%Y 12:01 AM</outStartDateFormat>
<outEndDateFormat>%M/%D/%Y 11:59 PM</outEndDateFormat>
Alternatively, you can change the file workplace.properties
3.If you download the module news from http://opencms.al-arenal.de/, you will have also the directory /system/moduledemos where there is an example about how to retrieve news items.
