[opencms-dev] openCms on the Mac (Client)

Hi

I too would love to see a cross platform (i.e. Win/Lin/Mac) solution.
I've seen a couple of open source JavaScript based ones, but due to
JavaScript differences they tend to be specific for a given browser
(making it cross platform only if it supports Mozilla - something I
could live with). But some of them looks very interesting, like the
bitflux editor, which is is based on XML and allows editing directly in
the page as it really looks (i.e. with background color, right column
width and in relation to other elements on the page). But it is still
very much work-in-progress, and I have no idea how well it would fit
into the OpenCms environment (one would at least have to define a
pseudo-html XML schema to provide the free form entry that the Active X
component allows today)

Java applets would be another way to go - there is a number of
commercial ones to be found on the net, but I have not tested any of
them, to see how well they work - they would still have to render much
like the common browsers, one thing that the Active X component does
reasonably well. So until someone comes up with a fully fledged Java
browser I remain a bit weary as to how well it would work (but then
again almost WYSIWYG is better than none)

There are some projects that attempt to use the built-in editor in
Mozilla, and that may be a viable way to go as well, but I still think
some tweaks needs to be done to the editor such that it can be
controlled better from the controller - a simple solution that I guess
would actually work if it wasn't for the CDATA tag in the source mode
is the "Composite" plugin (adds an edit button to text areas such that
the contents can be called up in the built in editor - but since it
doesn't know about your stylesheets or the like, it still is very
limited how much it is WYSIWYG)

And finally we could hope for Apple to come up with a feature in Safari
that would work much like the Active X component from MS, just that it
would work better...

Maybe some of the core developer could shed some light on what it would
take to integrate other editors (I haven't had time to look at the
source code, so I have no idea the API for the editor is)
