Sure you can change the names from /opencms/opencms/ to anything else. The
documentation for mod_proxy available on opencms.org is about getting rid of
this prefix altogether, not renaming it. You can get rid of one directory by
renaming your application to /ROOT, but it's about removing both. AFIAK the
mod_proxy solution is the only solution that actually can achive this quite
often requested feature. 

Setting up OpenCms with Apache http using other connectors available (like
mod_jk) should be quite easy, just follow the instructions in the connectors
documentation.
