I though I had my openCMS installation done and could start building, but I still get exception errors when building projects and new pages.
Quick Question: Does it have to be Tomcat 1.4? Is tomcat 5.0 problematic? Has anyone had problems with it.
Here is an error I get when creating new pages

Hi list,
does anyone know a solution how to show external content (e.g. from another
domain) as content in an opencms body-element.
I can't use frames or iframes.
I think of a solution where I have a html-page no matter what page. It can
be any page in the web. I want to show this page as a body-element of a
opencms-page. Surrounded by header, footer, navigation etc.
Is there a possibility to do this? Probably parsing this page and stripping
everything but the "<body>body content</body>" of this page?
Thanks a lot in advance

we did something like this with just using the Commons-HttpClient and
then included this response into the JSP ...
Is this what you need?
Snippet fpr HttpClient-Usage:
// Create an instance of HttpClient.
HttpClient client = new HttpClient();
String url = "http://www.synyx.de";
// Create a method instance.
GetMethod method = new GetMethod(url);
// Provide custom retry handler is necessary
DefaultMethodRetryHandler retryhandler = new
DefaultMethodRetryHandler();
retryhandler.setRequestSentRetryEnabled(false);
retryhandler.setRetryCount(3);
method.setMethodRetryHandler(retryhandler);
try {
// Execute the method.
int statusCode = client.executeMethod(method);
if (statusCode != HttpStatus.SC_OK) {
System.err.println("Method failed: " +
method.getStatusLine());
}
// Read the response body.
byte[] responseBody = method.getResponseBody();
// Deal with the response.
// Use caution: ensure correct character encoding and is not
binary data
System.out.println(new String(responseBody));
} finally {
// Release the connection.
method.releaseConnection();
}
Hope this helps ...

Hi, I tried it , but I have the same problem as before, the
workplace is empty and my Mozilla's JavaScript console shows:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Index or size is negative or greater
than the allowed amount" code: "1" nsresult: "0x80530001
(NS_ERROR_DOM_INDEX_SIZE_ERR)" location:
"http://localhost:8080/cms/opencms/system/workplace/views/top_head.jsp Line: 13"]
My browser is:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20040803
The same thing happens in MSIE:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
The only things which I have nonstandard is the webapp name "cms"
instead of "opencms" and the database name is also not "opencms".
Is this hardcoded somewhere or what ?

With that approach you need to make sure that you don't have any relative
links or image paths as part of the content, since these would point to your
server. Also - if your source site relies on any session information that
would not work correctly.
Such a shame that there is no library available, which would allow you to do
this (a bit like portlets)... Or does someone know one?

Olli

Hello List,
next point in OCMS6 i found is that when i log in a User as webUser via
CmsObject ... the name of the user is always export instead of the
origin Username ...
Can anyone approve this?
Is it better to use a Guest dependend (inherited) Group to get all
former called WebUsers together?
Has anyone experiences with thousands of users in one Group which is a
Guest group?
In one of my projects we have thousands and thousands of users ... is
there any way to sort them better actually?

On further investigation, I used webappname "opencms" and database
name "opencms", but the problem persists. It si caused by
JavaScript code in top_head.jsp which is:
12 function loadBody() {
13 var link =
document.forms.wpViewSelect.wpView.options[document.forms.wpViewSelect.wpView.selectedIndex].value;
14 window.top.body.location.href = link;
15 }
i.e it tries to get the selected option from form "wpViewSelect",
but it is empty:
<form name="wpViewSelect" method="post"
action="/opencms/opencms/system/workplace/views/top_head.jsp">
<td><select name="wpView" style="width:150px"
onchange="document.forms.wpViewSelect.submit()">
</select>
</td>
</form>
In the top_head.jsp the code generating the selection is:
wp.getViewSelect("name=\"wpView\" style=\"width:150px\"
onchange=\"document.forms.wpViewSelect.submit()\"")
I wonder why nobody else has this problem ? My setup is pretty
standard:
Date: 27.10.2004 14:01:16
Used JDK: 1.4.2_04
Used Servlet Engine: Apache Tomcat/5.0.25
MySQL is 4.0.16

Hello,
I'm investigating opencms and have some unanswered questions.
1. Which editor plugins exist which implement the new opencms editor API ?
2. Are there problems with WindowsXP service pack 2 ?
3. Is it possible to show only a set of folders per user instead of the whole
tree ?
4. Does opencms keeps versions of documents ? Is it possible to go back to a
specific version ?
Please reply if you know the answer to one of these questions.
The questions are related to the version 6 of opencms.
many thanks in advance

Hello,
I am currently evaluation OpenCMS. I can install/use OpenCMS 5 on Linux and
WinXP
and OpenCMS 6 (both Alphas) on Linux. However, I do not manage to
successfully install 6.0
on my WinXP machine, while a colleague has no problems with it.
Symptom is as follows: After installation which runs without problems I can
log in to the workplace.
There, however, I have no views. I can choose between Online and Offline
project. Both show only
the folder "/sites/default/" with no files below. The site combo box lets
me choose between
"/" and "/sites/default/".
My guess is something went wrong during the setup of the vfs. I logged the
SQL queries done by OpenCMS
and found a line
SELECT ...
FROM CMS_ONLINE_STRUCTURE,CMS_ONLINE_RESOURCES
WHERE CMS_ONLINE_STRUCTURE.RESOURCE_PATH LIKE '/system/workplace/views/_%'
AND NOT (CMS_ONLINE_STRUCTURE.RESOURCE_PATH LIKE
'/system/workplace/views/_%/_%')
AND CMS_ONLINE_STRUCTURE.RESOURCE_ID=CMS_ONLINE_RESOURCES.RESOURCE_ID
AND CMS_ONLINE_RESOURCES.RESOURCE_TYPE=0
ORDER BY CMS_ONLINE_STRUCTURE.RESOURCE_PATH
which seems to look after VFS-entries for /system/workplace/views but finds
none.
On the other side, some files are present in
{tomcat-home}\webapps\opencms\WEB-INF\setupdata\vfs\system\workplace\views
so these seem not to have been imported during setup.
Most tables are filled with data so I think it's not a general MySQL
problem.
My setup is:
WinXP Pro SP1 (512 MB)
Internet Explorer 6.0 (with latest patches)
Tomcat 5.0.19
Java HotSpot Client VM 1.4.2_05-b04 (with -Xmx256M)
MySQL 4.0.17-nt-log
best regards,
Andreas Lemke

Dear OpenCms and Java specialists,
I tried installation of OpenCMS 5.0 on two PC. I got the Java, I got the
Tomcat 5.0 and I have SQL.
The last part of unzipping the opencms.war also worked fine ...except
when one wants to proceed with the last part by accessing
http://localhost:8080/opencms/ocsetup/
<BLOCKED::http://localhost:8080/opencms/ocsetup/>
here is what happens ... and that's there regardless of reinstalling
Java, reinstalling Tomcat.
Now, the only thing I did not try yet is to uninstall MySQL ... which I
had on my machine before the rest of it.
General advice, I think the server installation is not detail enough and
while I am sure it works on new box, my two old boxes that had different
versions of Java and Tomcat before plus other things do not seem to like
it.
I explored already Zope and Mango and tell you that if it was not
because at work I was assigned to make the webcam work, I would toss it
in the corner and never look at it again.
Here is the mistake I get,
I would appreciate a lot any help anyone can give me with this
Thanks,

Assuming Windows:-
In development I have installed Apache as a service but I like to choose
which Tomcat JK2 connects to. But I usually test on Tomcat standalone
first. For the Tomcat side of the Apache/Tomcat on my Windows XP
workstation. I set up variants of the following:-
-----------------
startup.bat
-----------------
rem STARTUP.bat Tomcat start - 29 October 2003
c:
cd \progs\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.19
set JAVA_HOME=\java\j2sdk1.4.2_02
set JSEE_HOME=\java\j2eesdk1.4_beta2
set CATALINA_HOME=\progs\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.19
set CATALINA_OPTS=-Dfile.encoding=ISO-8859-1
rem Start Tomcat
bin\startup
-------------------
shutdown.bat
-------------------
rem SHUTDOWN.bat Tomcat shutdown - 29 October 2003
c:
cd \progs\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.19
set JAVA_HOME=\java\j2sdk1.4.2_02
set JSEE_HOME=\java\j2eesdk1.4_beta2
set CATALINA_HOME=\progs\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.19
set CATALINA_OPTS=-Dfile.encoding=ISO-8859-1
rem Shutdown Tomcat
bin\shutdown
---------------------
I think the -Dfile.encoding is now fixed to be UTF-8 and so I don't
think I need the CATALINA_OPTS overide any more.
I dropped opencms.war in %CATALINE_HOME%/webapps started Tomcat then
connected to http://localhost:8080/opencms/setup/. ... All fine.
The OpenCMS "install.html" instructions has worked for me on various
Windows servers and various versions of mySQL and Tomcat.
I would check that your Windows environment variables; echo %PATH%; echo
%CLASSPATH% are set OK.
You do need administrator privileges for this work.
Regards
Mike

Hi all,
OpenCms 6.0 alpha 2 (aka 5.5.3) has been released and is available for
download from the http://www.opencms.org website.
This release includes the 'templateone' module, a ready-made and highly
configurable template with countless options. It also includes an extended
demonstration for the XML content feature of OpenCms 6.0.
In case you try out this 6.0 alpha 2 release, please provide feedback
regarding the 'templateone' and the XML content feature.
For a full list of features and open issue in this release, please check out
the release notes that come with the download, or have a look at the OpenCms
homepage at http://www.opencms.org.
Any help in developing the OpenCms 6.0 "final" version is greatly
appreciated. The more help we get the sooner we can expect a stable release.
If you want to contribute, please contact me directly, or send a mail to
this mailing list.
Best Regards,
Alex.

Hello,
I have 6 alpha 2 installed ok with no problems but the xmlcontent demo
page (linked from templateone to
http://localhost:8080/opencms/xmlcontent) is an empty page - despite
making sure the checkbox is checked on install....
Having looked in the module list, i notice that the xmlcontent module
is missing - do i therefore need to manually install it?
Also, when trying to create a new project i get the following error:
java.lang.RuntimeException: Saved siteroot empty!
at
org.opencms.file.CmsRequestContext.restoreSiteRoot(CmsRequestContext.java:392)
at
com.opencms.workplace.CmsAdminProjectNew.getContent(CmsAdminProjectNew.java:358)
at
com.opencms.template.CmsXmlTemplate.getContent(CmsXmlTemplate.java:136),
etc.
hmmm, is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

We are using opencms 5.0.1 Kaitan.
When a user logs into opencms, it closes the login browser and opens a new
browser. I would like to modify our installation so that when a user logs
in, the next page is served in the same browser window. I have tried
modifying the function "openwin" in vfs/system/login/index so that after
login, it doesn't pop up the new browser, but my modified code is never
served. It keeps serving the old login page with the popup. I tried flushing
all the caches I could find.
Someone showed me where I can just have the user go directly to:
http://localhost:8080/opencms/opencms/system/workplace/action/index.html
Which does bring up the workplace in the same browser under the guest
account, but I still need for the users to log in to other accounts besides
guest.
How can I modify our install to change this behavior? Do I have to rebuild
all of opencms?

Hi there,
hope someone can help me. I created a default body, but I get an exception,
telling me, that the XML-document is not wellformed.
I found an older thread about that prob, where there is a statement that one
needs a XML-File like in /system/body/...
http://mail.opencms.org/pipermail/opencms-dev/2003q2/005495.html
However, there is no such folder on my instance of OpenCMS and I didn't find
any other XML-File, whose structure would seem appropriate.
Could please someone tell me the right structure for the document.
Tanks a lot,
Stephan

Check out the file "setup.log" located in your WEB-INF/config folder. Maybe
there's more / better information about what happend during the import of
the workplace.

Check out if the file "opencms-templateone.jar" exists in WEB-INF/lib of
your OpenCms installation. If not, check our WEB-INF/config/setup.log to see
if there where any issues during setup.

Maybe there is a confict of libaries, e.g. Xerces or Digester, that causes a
file not to be imported? Check ouf WEB-INF/config/setup.log to see if there
are any issues reported during setup. This is a fairly uncommon issue. The
wpViewSelect is filled from the folders in (VFS) /system/workplace/views/...

Manual installation worked for me.
But it was not installed after setup either.
Although someone else installed Alpha 2 on the
same machine without any problems.
The only difference was he used IE and I used Firefox PR1.

I can't. Tested creation with site roots "/" and "/sites/default".

AFAIK there _may_ be an issue with the module selection (in the setup
wizard) and JavaScript compatibility in Moz/Firefox. May be related to the
automatic dependency check JavaScript. I'll check this and make sure we
remove this issue (if it exists) for the next release...

I am able to get to the workspace and log in, etc, by going to:
/opencms/opencms/system/login/
Am I missing something here? or is the link wrong?

Did you install 6.0 alpha 2? If so, the welcome module may not have been
imported because of a bug in the setup wizard. Try to install it manually
from the Administration -> Module management.

Alex.

During the installation, I had everything checked to install, including iirc the Welcome Page, etc. I will purge everything and do the install again, to see if I can reproduce this.

After purging the webapp and the DB, I installed again and the page was there. Horray.
My previous installation had been interrupted and restarted; perhaps this caused the problem.

Greetings everybody,
I'm pretty new to using OpenCMS. I'm using version 5.0 because the site will
go live in about a month. I know everyone is having fun and more interested
in version 6.0 but I could use a few pointers. I've been working my way
through the Howto documents. I cannot get the basic jsp hot to to work. I
am getting a Resource loader error. The description is Dected inclusion
loop for target '........./form1.jsp'. Here are my very simple pages.
Could someone please glance at them and let me know what I'm doing wrong.
there are people in the archives with similar problems, but I couldnt find a
resolution. Any help would be much appreciated.

Subject: [opencms-dev] Changing Admin user password
To: <opencms-dev at opencms.org>
Message-ID: <s17faf7a.089 at LIBRARY.ucsd.edu>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Upon initial installation, OpenCMS suggests that one change the Admin password.
When one goes to Administration > Edit Users > Select "Admin", click "Edit"
and just enters a new password, an error is thrown:
org.opencms.main.CmsException: user data missing
Which comes from:
CmsAdminUsers.java:446
Which is:
if(email.equals("") || userLastname.equals("") || user.equals("")) {
throw new CmsException("user data missing", CmsException.C_NO_USER); }
Which is somewhat silly since there is no default lastname or email for the admin. I suggest either the lastname or email not be required, or a default one for the admin be supplied.
Also better error messages (distinct ones for each of email, lastname, and usernmae) should exist so that a user entering info here can figure out what they did wrong.
Next, once I have supplied a lastname and email, I see two password fields: "Password" and "Confirm Password". This setup makes me assume that I am entering in the _new_ password in both fields, which I do and get:
org.opencms.main.CmsException: [org.opencms.db.CmsDriverManager] Error resetting password for user 'Admin'
Looking at the code at:
CmsDriverManager.java:6707
I see that this actually wants the first password to be the _old_ password and the new password to be entered into "Confirm Password".
This is very confusing. It seems like the "change password" area should be redesigned (relabeled at least). A good setup might be:
Old Password: ______
New Password: ______
Confirm New Password: _____
I have attatched a patch to give more descriptive error messages for the user data problem. It defines a new error code, C_USER_DATA. I also added two error code descriptions which were absent for C_GROUP_ALREADY_EXISTS and C_USER_ALREADY_EXISTS.
Should I open a bug report to submit this patch, or is over the list okay?
Kellen

Hi all,
Has anyone managed to install Alpha 2 on Windows XP? My attempts keep
failing and I am starting to think that it must be because Windows XP still
have 255 characters limitation for path length (HYPERLINK
"http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-u
s/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prkc_

/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit
/en-us/prkc_fil_rbrx.asp). My installation fails with the modules, but gets
always further shorter I set by tomcat path. However, my tomcat is now in
root directory and called 't', so cannot shorten the path any more than
that...

Olli

Hi there,
hope someone can help me. I created a default body, but I get an exception,
telling me, that the XML-document is not wellformed.
I found an older thread about that prob, where there is a statement that
one
needs a XML-File like in /system/body/...
http://mail.opencms.org/pipermail/opencms-dev/2003q2/005495.html
However, there is no such folder on my instance of OpenCMS and I didn't
find
any other XML-File, whose structure would seem appropriate.
Could please someone tell me the right structure for the document.
Tanks a lot,
Stephan

I have successfully installed OpenCMS v6 a2 on Windows XP sp1, MySQL
4.0.18, Tomcat 5.0.28 using IE6 and again with Firefox.
I can open resources and the demos work fine.
There were a couple of issues during setup (I can look into fixing if
required);
As Olli Aro found out, there is a Windows XP limitation on filename length,
so when I attempted to extract the opencms.war to my existing webapp
directory, it failed. I resolved this by moving my webapp directory to the
root, thus shortening the overall pathname.
The Setup Wizard has an issue while importing the
org.opencms.frontend.templateone modules.
Following the resolution is the relevant part of my setup.log
I recommend not importing these 3 modules during the Setup Wizard, but
after, manually via the workplace, until the issue is resolved.
Now to checkout the demos more closely...

AFAIK there _may_ be an issue with the module selection (in the setup
wizard) and JavaScript compatibility in Moz/Firefox. May be related to the
automatic dependency check JavaScript. I'll check this and make sure we
remove this issue (if it exists) for the next release...

Alex.

Yes, we do install on XP regularly. We have NTFS and e.g. my path is
C:\Java\Tmpcat_5_18\.
A workarounf may be zipping the modules (each module folder, individually)
before starting the setup. Zipped modules are still supported, of course,
it's just easier to keep them in CVS zipped.

Alex.

Subject: [opencms-dev] OpenCMS Alpha 2 on Windows XP
Hi all,
Has anyone managed to install Alpha 2 on Windows XP? My attempts keep
failing and I am starting to think that it must be because Windows XP still
have 255 characters limitation for path length
(http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-u
s/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prkc_
fil_rbrx.asp). My installation fails with the modules, but gets always
further shorter I set by tomcat path. However, my tomcat is now in root
directory and called 't', so cannot shorten the path any more than that.
Regards,
Olli

I assume the issues you encounter are related to the XP path length problem,
which is really new to me. Are you using FAT32 as file system? We have XP on
6 machines (all NTFS) and never had any path length limit problem.

Hi Dariush,
I'm trying to use your pool implementation with datasources.
I have noticed that the datasource configuration for oracleOci and
oracleOcionline is the same for location and xa-location parameters.
Is this correct?

Hi Alex,
my datasource implementation doesn't substitute at all the default connpool,
but it's an alternative.
Simply, you can decide to use it or not (setting useDataSource=true/false).
If you decide to use DataSource, OpenCms instantiates DataSourceDriver
instead of CmsDriver.
If you want the default connPool, you set useDataSource=false.
Moreover, like the default connPool, U need 3 different datasources and
their name is the same of orig connPool (for example oracleOci,
oracleOcionline, oracleOcibackup).
- For the shell, it can be forced to use connPool even if useDataSource=true
in opencms.properties
- For setup, simply I think that you should mantain the actual one and give
the opportunity, in production env, to make it possibile to switch to an
external datasource, especially using Oracle, modifying the
opencms.properties directly.
Dariush.
