[opencms-dev] Design Questions

I am just starting to work with opencms and wondering if there are any white papers or documents that describe the high level architecture of the sw.  I'm looking to implement the ability to reference local and external content by metadata, rather than hard coding the references, and any insight in this area would be greatly appreciated.
