You're wrong. It helps a lot understanding the basic concepts of OpenCms and 
more.
Together with the other documentation, JSP, source code and "how did they do 
this" studying its worth buying.
Well, I get no money for that :)

If you have no or minor knowledge of Java use opencms tags to build JSPs.
I can recommend all the O'Reilly Books about Java, JSP and Servlet 
programming.
I get no money for that too :)

I just saw, they also have some "open" books, like open source software for no 
costs. But nothing about Java yet.
