As already said, this didn't help. I now got a bit further.
In /etc/hosts I changed the line
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
into
127.0.0.1 localhost
because I recalled this being nonsense causing all kinds of trouble.
After restarting mysql and tomcat I now got a bit further and got the double error window
with an error on creating database: (Sorry for the longish line)
Database could not be created!
