[opencms-dev] channels?

Can anyone explain to me the meaning of the VFS subdirectory "channels"?
What is it good for. Never saw something in there. Whenever I saw something
like "channels" in MSIE or Windows I gratefully said "no, thank you".

Is it a deprecated concept and can or will it go away in some of the
next releases? Anyone using it?
