Yes you can do that.
But: did you rename your opencms folder to ROOT? - Because the 1st
/opencms comes from the name of the web application and web application
ROOT will be mapped to /
*That* is what makes it into the root application. And then there might
be a servlet mapping in the web.xml (and in the default config the
second /opencms comes from the servlet mapping in web.xml)
