Yes, it's the first line - with no content preceding it - which is output to
the browser.

As for the text to use, best to do some research because there are
implications for target browsers, layout bugs etc.  A good place to start is
http://www.alistapart.com/stories/doctype/ but a Google search for 'doctype
quirks' (without quotes) will get you other useful stuff.

Examining the pages of my site I see that they all are missing a starting
<!DOCTYPE statement.

I assume it would be a good idea to put it into the main template but what
would be the appropriate statement?
