[opencms-dev] Server migration - serious opencms troubles

Have you tried using the ubuntu-shipped tomcat 5.5 ? It works fine for me 
with OpenCms.

But one specific thing I remember about debian-based distros and tomcat 
is a setting in /etc/default/tomcat5.5:

TOMCAT5_SECURITY=no
