You could create a custom widget for the template form, with some javascript
to do the disabling - eg a DisablableFieldWidget.
Do a Google on 'opencms custom widget' to find info.

guys,
i wonder if it's possible to disable a field in a xml template if another
field contains a value (think of two images of different sizes, but you'll
allow only one on the website. if image1 contains a value, imageb should
become read only).
