[opencms-dev] Creating cached OpenCms thumbnails via URL?

We currently try to use OpenCms' great image resizing and thumbnail caching
features from another webapp (Wicket based).
It seems, that calling a thumbnail URL of an image stored in OpenCms does
not create an cached thumbnail, instead OpenCms is always creating the image
on the fly. Is there any way to achieve this?

This is an example for a thumbnail URL we are calling:

http://.../image.jpg?__scale=w:1300,h:900,q:80,c:f0f0f0
