[opencms-dev] Opencms 7.5.3 doesn't start when tomcat6 is run as service (win7/64)

I'm having a weird time resurrecting an opencms 7.5 site which has been moved
to a Windows 7/64 virtual machine after it had been run for years under
Windows XP/32.

I'm running jre7 + jdk1.7.0_51 (64 bit).

The effect is the following:

When I run tomcat 6.0.39 interactively in a DOS shell (startup.bat)
as an administrative local user, Opencms starts fine and I can use the
workplace without a hitch.

But when I start tomcat6 as a service, opencms doesn't start at all.
I already thought it might be a permission problem since I 
copied the ROOT app as a tar file from the other system and the service
runs as local SYSTEM user while running it manually it runs as me as local
administrative user.

Any ideas welcome.
