[opencms-dev] reading properties in formatter

Hello,
what is the simplest way to read a property of a structured content from
inside a <cms:formatter>?
I have a structured content that have a custom property but when the
formatter loads and I try to read this property using <cms:property
name="xyz" file="search"> it returns nothing.
