MySQL Serialization Error

Greetings,
Last Friday we applied the 6.2.1 upgrad wizard to our 6.0.0
installation. It went without error but when trying to login to the
admin page it rejects all usernames. There error logs show that that a
stray "x" is appearing after the "=" sign as in: USER_INFO=x'A……'. I
poked through the web CVS interface but couldn't find where the extra
"x" is coming from. Likewise webusers to the site can no longer get it.
Below is the error message for the Admin user, the error is identical
in form for other users.

Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks!
This is really weird.

I don't have trouble with 6.21 (after finding my own faults at least
with some help from the list... - but I did not use 6.0.0; I went from
5->6.03->6.04->6.20->6.21, I think)

Does login via cmsshell work?
Any old classes/jars lying around somewhere in your webapp folder?
Any strange log entries in your update.log?
