thought that I could change it to use a different site as the default,

maybe you did too much.<br>
I have just extracted the opencms.war into /webapps/ROOT rather than
/webapps/opencms<br>
<br>
At least step 3 you did would probably lead to trouble - I don't think
you'd need this.<br>
