The book is ok, but not that "step through the code" as you mention. It starts that way in the basic introduction but middle of chapter 3 it jumps pretty much around. When you are a starter to OpenCms, it is confusing, even after having read the preceding book "Managing and costumizing OpenCms 6 Websites" which was a better guide to OpenCms but didn't offer any hints how to develop individual modules. This is my personal impression, I couldn't find a real step by step guide yet .
I don’t know much about your requirements, but in most places, you are going to need a lot more than template 1 or 2 (or not?). a book worth 30/40 bux is hardly any price to pay if you are doing something real big… anyway, this is all relative to your requirement. I did buy the book. I liked it for the fact that it got me off the ground real quick, however, I would say that it is very basic. I liked how it showed me how to easily step thru opencms code, build customizations right at my desktop and so on. Other than that I found it to be a very basic introduction to the API etc…

I am using the OpenCms 7 Development Book, and haven't read anything about Template 2, only Template 1 ist mentioned in there.
I am in the same situation as you are and I would be happy to find a source (internet or literature) for Template 2 Development.
Best regards
I have googled and found lots of references to template one, but few to
template two. I presume that as someone went to the effort of creating
template two that is it a useful basis for creating simple sites, but other
than the examples (which show lovely things but do not say how to achieve
them) there seems to be very little on the subject to guide the new user.

Or is this covered in the OpenCMS Development book? In which case the
advertising material for that book needs to be updated to say so. If it is
then I will aquire a copy.
