Hm.

I found that using the IBM JDK 1.1.8 rather than the Blackdown/Sun port on
linux gave an improvement. I'm currently running it on two machines, a
PIII 500 with 128MB and a P300 96MB thinkpad (I have to get my kicks from
somewhere). Yes, the latter is rather, er, slow, but the PIII rockets
along quite nicely (RH Linux 6.1). Make sure that all the components are
tweaked individually. Seeing as there is a potentially large chain of
communication, delays in one component will obviously have a
multiplicative effect on total performance.
