I agree. Implementing a data access layer like OJB or Hibernate would be a
huge step forward.
By doing this OpenCMS will work on other Databases (like postgres,
SQLServer, DB2, Oracle), without a problem. It would also free up the
OpenCMS dev team to work on bigger issues.
It can be a slow transition. We can start off by just using the new Data
Access Layer to execute the existing queries. Then slowly port over the
Queries to use the OR Mapped Objects.
Once that process is complete OpenCMS would be database independant.
Can someone give a brief overview of the changes required to make this
change?

No it's not in CVS, it was just some internal testing we did at Alkacon.

In a later version this might be an option.
