Hello Alex,
Yepp, that's exactly the reason for my misinterpretation....
I expected the shown folder rights to change after the "set" button, but
did not look for the rights in the folder. These rights changed in the
right way...
So yes it is working. Thanks a lot.

Hmm, I am sure the security works. There must be some misunderstanding.
How do you know that this did not work?
FYI: The new permissions should be visible on any resource in the folder
("/protected") in your case.
So if there is a file "index.html" in that folder check the permissions
of that file. On the folder itself the "inherited permissions" shown
will not change, even though the permissions added for the folder in the
area below are of course valid.
