It will certainly give you a jump start.
It sums up a lot of what you would otherwise have to dig out from the
various documents, mailing list archives, and even the source code. It
doesn't cover all topics in depth, but it does give you sufficient
information on almost all of the subjects to get you started, and that
is what you typically lacks when you first starts out with OpenCms.
OpenCms has a higher learning curve than some of the low-end CMS's
since it is more of a framework for building sites rather than limited
pre-build set of sites. But once you get an idea of the clever thoughts
behind the various parts of OpenCms, you see a generic platform that
can be adapted to almost any needs (I won't say easily, but at least
you do not have to start from scratch and upcoming versions holds a
promise that things will get easier). The book provides an excellent
overview of that platform.
The book covers version 5, but do point out what is expected to change
in v.6.
