[opencms-dev] yet another form-based content question

I have a content schema and I create several items based on the schema.
I edit the schema and add more fields.
If I create a new item of that type, the new fields appear.
If I edit older items of that type, the new fields do not appear.

Is there something I need to do to the old items to make them acknowledge
the updated schema? 
I tried restarting the webapp but that did nothing
Or is this a bug?
