My 2 cents:

1. Start a postgre develompent effort, to integrate the existing model /
interaction into postgre's world

2. Use a generic DB approach. There are tons of projects (Torque or
Hibernate for example). Yes, there is a lot of work, but this is a CMS
software, not a DB optimized connection library. It could be great to
"outsource" the DB part and center this project's efforts on the CMS side.

I have some experience using Hibernate, and i can say it's a great tool to
enhace the model DESIGN and clean the DB-tricky code.
