I'd like to activate it because it worked great for a long time now....
With basic authentication I do not know how I can catch login errors... 
After the login dialog there comes only a blank page with an error
number...

I'm not sure why you would need to specifically 'activate' form based
authentication? If you want to use a form to login/logout a user, did
you look at the Welcome template, resources/login_element yet? That has
working code for a login/logout form.
