[opencms-dev] OpenCMS hangs under heavy load

Greetings all,

We have a site which gets over a million visitors a month at peak and
regularly pushes a T1 in concurrent bandwidth. It's running OpenCMS
5.0.1 on RHEL 3.0 with Tomcat 4.1.31 and J2SDK 1.4.2. The site has a
number of dynamic pages, but they are kept in the flex cache and change
only a few times a day, where they are re-cached.

Unfortunately, we've been seeing complete lockups of Java when an end
user tries to login and publish even a single file. This doesn't occur
when the load is lower in the evening. On a hang, what is normally a
single Java process consuming about 50% of the CPU becomes two Java
processes consuming ~25% each. At this point, the load shoots up to 2+
and the dynamic portions of the site become totally unresponsive for
anywhere between 2 and 5 minutes.

Has anyone else seen this kind of issue?

Thanks much,
-MB
