If you cannot get around it, then you can export the resource with the 
database tools into a zip file, manipulate the manifest.xml and the file 
itself in the zip file and re-import the resource.

You're right that it should be possible to rename the resource. But 
because you cannot create such resources anymore, it should be enough to 
clean up your old content
