Depends on what you mean by "use".

If you just want to use it as a nested XSD in some other XSD you don't have
to register it, but if you want it to be available in the dialogs a separate
xml type etc. you can't.

And you'd have to register the type using your unregistered type in order
to use that type, so at least indirectly yopu have to register the any
type in order to use it.
