Hi again,
I'll post a followup to myself:
I've just found the reason for my garbled workspace:
It was the old mod_jk for Apache 1.3x which comes with Debian Etch and
does not support the no-jk env-variable. After I've added some JkUnmount
lines to my httpd.conf it is working now.
Now I'll have to decide if I should stay with apache 1.3.x or switch to
apache 2.0.x
