[opencms-dev] Opencms throws http 500 error after running for some time

I had the problem again just a minute ago:

After loggin in to the admin interface I was opening an article throught 
the context menu "edit". While the new browser window was opening 
opencms encountered a connection pool timeout.

I checked the logs of apache, opencms, tomcat and mysql and could not 
find any traces of the 500 server error that was returned to the browser.
Restarting the opencms context (not tomcat) did solve the problem (wget 
--spider "http://***:***@***/manager/html/reload?path=/opencms")

As I have not altered the out of the box connection pool settings 
(except for the IP address) I do assume that someone placed a bad easter 
egg in the connection pool.
