[opencms-dev] problem installing opencms.war as ROOT.war (debian tomcat 5.5)

With webapps you mean the .war files? 
Then yes, as long as "/var/lib/tomcat5.5/webapps" is owned by tomcat55

Your path "/usr/share/tomcat5.5-webapps" (nor "/usr/share/tomcat5.5/webapps") 
does not exist on my debian etch...

I got 4GB ram here, and it runs fine (was the first opencms I setup in tomcat 
ever, to ymmv... :-) )
