[opencms-dev] building a download page

I'm seeking for a way to build a user specific download page.
Partially there are some small files like license keys which would be no 
problem to keep them in
the VFS and give them the right permissions.

But there may be larger files like a 2GB DVD distribution image.
How would one organize this? These large files would be better but into 
the real FS
and let be managed (still) by Tomcat (?) or Apache?

Anyone built such a szenario already?
