Hello,
late reply, but I want to confirm, that Tomcat 8 was the main key.
Also I think instructions in readme should be updated. I wasn’t able to start OC and rebuild search/solr indexes until I removed former ones in file system (WEB-INF/index), like already mentioned for JSP files. Also the place where to update/rebuild indexes has changed in back end, I found it in “Launchpad > Databases > Search indizes” (or whatever, have German UI here).
Regards,
Thorsten

Hello Thorsten.
In one of my test installations I had similar problems.... I don't remember exactly what it was.... but
I was not able to run OCMS 11 on Tomcat 7 !!
After upgrade to Tomcat 8... everything was fine....
I found this on stackoverflow....
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/23541532/org-apache-tomcat-util-bcel-classfile-classformatexception-invalid-byte-tag-in
I think your combination of your tomcat and jdk version does not work together for newer compiled
java libraries. Which exact version of tomcat do you have?
Kind regars
Bernhard

Hello Thorsten,
I have no answer for your question. But you could try to do an installation of OCMS 11 (no upgrade) on that machine and see, if a plain installation is running on it.
When we do upgrades, we quite often do a plain installation of OpenCms and do all the project specific customizations (e. g. solr config changes, custom jars and modules) afterwards.
In this approach you have to export all the content from the old system to the new one. So you will loose the contents history.
Check out, if you want to give it a try.
Good luck!
Best regards
Kai

Hello,
sorry for posting again, but my issue got no reply last week. So I reverted my virtual test machine back towhere I had a working OC 10.5.4.1 instance and tried again from scratch.
First I added “serverTimezone” in opencms.properties as last time I had problems starting upgrader without also. Did so, 10.5 instance still works. Cleared all caches, logged out, shut down Tomcat. Copied upgrade files, enabled wizard, started Tomcat, and ran /update/.
Tried hard to find errors in upgrade log, nothing I can see except this (which I guess is of no meaning):
( 13 / 54 ) Parsing links for "/system/modules/org.opencms.base/formatters/function-default.xml"... !!! failed
Everything else seemed fine, wizard got disabled, so stopped Tomcat again. Time for solr config upgrade…
Enabled solr in “opencms-search.xml” and copied “solr-update/configsets/default/conf/” content to “solr/configsets/default/conf/”. As my first attempt I don’t even try to merge something custom… And this already fails when trying to start Tomcat (JSP and work dir cleared).
Server console show especially this (there were no exception here before upgrade):
SCHWERWIEGEND: Unable to process Jar entry [module-info.class] from Jar [jar:file:/…/webapps/opencms/WEB-INF/lib/asm-6.0.jar!/] for annotations
org.apache.tomcat.util.bcel.classfile.ClassFormatException: Invalid byte tag in constant pool: 19
…
SEVERE: Exception sending context initialized event to listener instance of class org.opencms.main.OpenCmsListener
org.opencms.main.CmsInitException: Kritischer Fehler beim Initialisieren von OpenCms: SolrCore 'spellcheck' is not available due to init failure: Error opening new searcher.
…
SEVERE: Context [/opencms] startup failed due to previous errors
Shutting down OpenCms, version 11.0.0 in web application "opencms"
Shutdown completed, total uptime was 00:00:18.
Setup: Tomcat 7.0, Ubuntu, OpenJDK 8
So what is this? Any ideas?
Regards,
Thorsten
