Thanks for the correction. 

Re-instating the explorertype node in workplace-properties indeed does the trick ;)

excuse the wrong advice, hope you found it meanwhile. I myself got victim of it having forgotten that the right place where to enable page with free text is opencms-workplace.xml and it's still commented out by enclosing <!-- explorertype name="xmlpage" -->
